Restrictions Fuel China’s AI Ascent

Due to US restrictions on tech imports to China, Chinese scientists and engineers have to achieve more with less. It’s exactly this restraint that will trigger what the embargos wanted to suppress: Chinese global AI leadership.

At least, this is my current reading of the situation. Do I feel entirely comfortable with this potential outcome? Not really. Ideally, I would prefer to see a global, continuous AI competition where every country adheres to the same rules of the game.

Furthermore, there’s a lingering, weary feeling somewhere inside of me when installing Chinese open-source software on my private computer. I can’t quite pinpoint it. Perhaps it’s nothing, or perhaps it’s a rightfully cautious gut feeling.
