Don’t Forget Your Roots

There’s a fundamental principle that, I believe, should be etched into the core of every company’s ethos, and perhaps even included in every new employee’s starter package. It’s a truth that can be your best friend if you genuinely care about the organization you’ve built or currently work for.

While I wouldn’t call myself the biggest Apple fanboy, and recognizing some worrying stories regarding Mr. Jobs, there’s a particular message from his philosophy that speaks from my heart. It encapsulates a vital warning:

Do not start feeling contempt towards those who brought you where you are today. Because if you do, you will start to rot from the inside. You will start missing the „purpose“ that brought you here in the first place.

This insight highlights a profound truth. When we lose respect or develop contempt for our origins, our founders, or the initial vision that propelled us forward, we risk:

  • Internal decay, a gradual erosion of our foundational values.
  • Drifting from the original „purpose“ that fueled our initial journey and success.

Could this disconnect from our roots and original purpose be a significant reason why so many individuals and organizations today are grappling with a profound search for „purpose“?

What do YOU think?
