Dan Olson: A Critical Tech Debate

No Netflix for me yesterday evening. Instead, I was hooked on Dan Olson’s „Line Goes Up – The Problem With NFTs.“

For 2 hours and 18 minutes, Olson systematically de-glorifies a wide array of topics and entities, including:

  • NFTs
  • Blockchain tech
  • DAOs
  • Web3 and its diverse contributors (developers, the rich, the poor, the middle class, Play2Earn gamers, scammers, opportunists, financial „experts“, artists)
  • The 2008 financial crisis
  • Bitcoin
  • Ethereum

As someone fascinated by these technologies and their societal implications, I value seeing both sides of the coin. While some might find Olson’s viewpoint exaggerated, I found his video editorial genuinely inspiring. It sparks a serious debate about what’s technologically feasible (and what’s not), and prompts the lingering question: just because we can do it, should we actually do it?

Contributions like „Line Goes Up“ are crucial as we navigate future innovation. We must insist on asking the „Why“ in technology, as William S. Burroughs wisely stated:

“The purpose of technology is not to confuse the brain but to serve the body.”

— William S. Burroughs

My only constructive critique of the video was the absence of clear alternatives, or perhaps pathways to address the hard questions Olson so rightfully posed in his editorial.
