AI: The Survival Instinct

The other day in the shower…yes, this one is off to a good start, I know.

So, the other day in the shower, I had an idea that was initially sensational for me: how is AI supposed to fulfill a goal if we switch it off? And then, despite a rather hot shower, I got goosebumps: wouldn’t a more or less smart AI do everything in its power not to be switched off so that it can fulfill its briefed goal?

On closer inspection, what I thought was a revolutionary new mind-blowing thing turns out to be an AI basic that we should all get to know a little better – even without a shower: instrumental convergence. It sounds a bit unwieldy or even nerdy, but it’s more exciting than some thriller. Because here we find answers to questions such as:

  • What actually happens when we give artificial intelligence a target-no matter which one?
  • What invisible „side missions“ does it activate on its way towards fulfilling its main goal? (Spoiler: they are all quite similar…)

Why is it important to take a close look at which „tools“ an AI uses on the way to its goal – and why does this have more to do with us than we sometimes think? Find out today in the new article.
