Canary in the AI Coal Mine

Those following me here know my strong advocacy for generative artificial intelligence, yet I remain deeply reflective on its implications. In my role at Deutsche Telekom, keeping colleagues informed about the latest developments in this field is paramount. I was recently tasked with envisioning the era post-AGI—the dawn of Artificial Superintelligence (ASI).

By profession, I am neither a scientist nor a developer, nor did I contribute to early AI like „Eliza.“ However, I embrace my role as the canary in the coal mine for emerging trends, news, and innovation. It was in this capacity that stumbling across Josh Clymer’s depiction of a future darker than any „Black Mirror“ could produce truly rattled me and prompted crucial self-reflection:

  • Are we all still on the right track?
  • Did I fail?
  • Didn’t I do enough to educate my surroundings?
  • Did I inspire the right people—those in positions to truly bring about good change?

I genuinely urge you to seek out and read Clymer’s powerful narrative. Why? Because by internalizing these kinds of stark possibilities, we can playfully create alternatives and start thinking beyond the comfortable confines we’ve constructed for ourselves.

Don’t get too cozy!
